Shawn Ronald Baker, 23, Bowlus, was convicted Jan. 27 in Morrison County District Court of two felony counts of domestic assault.
According to the criminal complaint, on Sept. 13, 2014, a woman contacted law enforcement to report that her 16-year-old daughter was at Baker’s apartment and was being held against her will.
Law enforcement arrived on the scene, but the lights were out and no one answered the door. The victim’s mother did not respond to phone calls.
On Sept. 23, 2014, law enforcement received a report that the 16-year-old victim had been assaulted by Baker at the apartment on Sept. 13, 2014.
The victim was brought to the hospital for treatment of a large cut on her head that required six staples, as well as multiple bruises.
The victim’s mother said the incident was not reported because the victim was dating Baker and did not want law enforcement involved.
The victim later stated she had been living with Baker at his apartment for about two months at the time of the assault. The victim state Baker was very violent and has pushed her, punched her and hit her many times within that two-month period.
The victim said Baker would sometimes hold her captive in the apartment and prevent her from seeing her family.
The victim said that on Sept. 13, 2014, Baker had shoved her and caused her to fall and hit her head on a towel rack. The victim said she was bleeding and asked Baker to take her to the hospital. Instead, Baker grabbed the victim, threw her down and punched her repeatedly. The victim’s mother then allegedly picked her up and took her to the hospital.
Baker’s criminal record shows a previous conviction for domestic assault April 30, 2014 and a conviction for violating an order of protection April 30, 2014.
Baker was given a stay of imposition: for one felony, he was sentenced to five years supervised probation and 55 days in jail.
For the other felony, he was sentenced to five years probation and 53 days in jail, to be served concurrently with the previous sentence.
He was also fined $185 for each felony.
Baker had one felony count of third degree assault and one misdemeanor count each of fleeing a police officer and possession of synthetic cannabinoids dismissed as part of a plea bargain.
